Ridgeland, Mississippi March 30, 2005
The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) has selected Venture Technologies to implement a Campus Area Network (CAN) on the Oxford, Mississippi Campus.
By standardizing on Cisco's award-winning Catalyst 6500 series, Ole Miss will
enjoy a reliable, high-performance network that boasts ease of administration
and end-to-end manageability. Comprised of 38 Cisco Catalyst 6513 and 6509 switches,
the network will deliver continuous connectivity to the University's students,
faculty and administration. The 13-slot 6513 and the 9-slot 6509 are ideally
suited for a demanding campus environment and feature high performance Fast,
Gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet that service the backbone, access and distribution
networking layers while connecting users to server farms and Data Centers. In
a single chassis, Cisco's 6500 series switches support a wide array of networking
technologies including firewalling, Intrusion Detection Systems, VPN's, multiple
WAN interfaces, content networking, network analysis, voice modules and SSL acceleration.
When fully deployed, the network will provide high-performance networking to
over 6,000 concurrent users.
The versatility and scalability of the multilayer 6500 series will position Ole Miss for future deployments of wireless, video, IP Telephony and other converged technologies across the main Ole Miss campus and the University's remote campuses.
Gerard Gibert, Venture's CEO remarked – "The new Cisco-powered network will deliver instant and ubiquitous access to the University's vast computing resources and data repositories and is consistent with Ole Miss' charter as a Great American Public University".
Installation of the new network will begin in May, 2005 is expected to be completed by September, 2005. Implementation will be a joint effort between the University's IT department and Venture's Professional Services Organization. In addition, Venture will subcontract with a few University Engineering students for assistance. During the course of the project, these students will be exposed to world-class networking technologies and Venture's proven project management and implementation methodologies.
